An industrial edge gateway must work with the installed devices, network boundaries, environmental conditions, and support model. Comparing processor speed or the number of advertised protocols is not enough. Build the shortlist from required data flows and test the exact driver and security combinations you will use.
Design the requirement before the configuration
Document source models, firmware, protocols, polling requirements, destination interfaces, and whether any writes are required. Check certificate handling, local storage behavior, remote management, update policy, and diagnostic access. Consider environmental rating, power arrangement, installation space, and serviceability. A supported protocol name does not guarantee support for every device function or a convenient mapping into the target application.
Worked scenario
For an illustrative project, a gateway must read three legacy device families, buffer eight hours of data, and publish to an approved MQTT service. The acceptance test should prove all three drivers together, persistence across a controlled restart, replay under ongoing load, and credentials/certificate replacement. A bench demonstration with one simulated device proves only that demonstration.

Acceptance and handover
Ask the supplier to distinguish tested capability from planned support. Preserve the test configuration and observations for the procurement record. Evaluate replacement and support effort over the intended service life, including the practical consequences of a failed storage device or unavailable license server.
